In last nights Uncharted Seas battle the action was fast and furious. Dan, Rob, Chris, Richard and Ricky all piled into the scenario with aplomb and seemed to enjoy it. There was plenty to learn for designing future ones and some tweaks for this one.
Orcs and Dwarves deployed in ambush to sink an Elven Battleship. Dragonlords deployed en masse to slap the younger races into line. The elven fleet piled forward to reach their how port and the Dragonlords clashed with the Dwarves and Orcs early. Small ships from all sides fell to massed fire, with one Dragonlord frigate being near vaporised by the heavy orc frontal battery.
As the game progressed a set of Elven Corsairs appeared, boarded a dwarven heavy cruiser and captured it before disappearing nearly as fast as they had arrived leaving behind a solitary derelict frigate to be captured.
The Dwarves were caught between elf and dragonlord and eventually succumbed losing their precious shiny new Heavy Cruisers.
THe orc frigates steamed to meet the elven fleet and exchanged blows doing well until the battleship and cruiser ranged in. Their one boarding action resulted in a derelict orc and elf frigate bobbing on the waves, corpses strewn about them being washed slowly to feed the weeds of the Sargasso Belt nearby.
Seeking a way out amongst violent natural and unnatural wind changes, the elves dived for a gap between two islands, harried by dragonlord frigates as the cruisers circled behind them and the Orc cruisers moved into position ahead.
Magic then entered the fray with poisonous clouds appearing and ships teleporting. Orcish frontal batteries failed to make their shots tell, unlike the pinpoint return fire of the elven orb projectors.
Last ditch boarding action by elite marines failed to halt the Elven battleship, as all her comrades fell to protect her.
Overall result:
Two races claim victory....
Elven fleet of Lord Krees D'Lowe achieved their primary objective of delivering a mighty new battleship, for which the Elven nation rejoiced while mourning the sacrifice of their war dead. Promotion to Rear Admiral cannot be far behind.
The infamous elven corsair Captain R'kard became notorious exchanging his lithe frigates for a belching dwarven ironclad and is now the terror of the Low Seas having achieved their primary objective of increasing the meagre firepower of their pirate fleet with a shiny new cruiser vessel.
The orcs and their warboss, Riiiickkeee!, went swimming home on ramshackle rafts, agreeing that though they hadn't really won, they had had a hell of a good fight and done a lot of damage and so they hadn't really lost too much either and overall they had just squeezed a positive outlook.
The Dwarves in their life-submersibles returned home to the shame of having let the Elves through and having lost the newest vessels of the fleet. However, their commander, Deep Dan, had sunk a certain amount of enemy shipping and although he had received a significant reversal of fortunes so it might have been worse. The Commodore was demoted and had his beer privileges revoked.
Still, he had done better than the Dragonlord commander who returned home, short of ships and having allowed the young races to slap him around. History does not record his name nor his gruesome fate, beyond the word 'Owwiieee'.
Uncharted Seas the Rematch
In a land made of sea, some land and a big pile of Sargasso do Mighty Ships move. In these Uncharted Seas, peoples met and shot each other to bits.
In the blue-green corner, we had the Dwarves. Resplendent in iron, one flotilla of a battleship and 3 cruisers and another of 6 frigates and a pair of heavy cruisers. Marching on his battleship's armoured poop-deck we had Rear-Admiral Belle Ami, supported ably by Lieutenant Junior Grade Rik the Beardless recently promoted to brevet command and mounting his flag upon his heavy cruisers.
In the other blue-green corner was an unholy, twisted alliance of elf and orc. Who knows what disgusting compact these two had forged and what desperate times had forced such a coupling (No, please tell me as I'm right outta ideas). Pounding his wardrums and leading off with his 3 cruisers and 6 frigates was newly recovered Orc Warlord Rik 'Ard. His associate in unpleasantry was the Elf Admiral Selenof Terenos Evandar Valedictor Entalaphos - or S.T.E.V.E as he is styled in certain nefarious circles.
The action commenced shortly after the Rik the Beardless's pint was spilt and he communicated to his Rear-Admiral that the other fleet was sailing carelessly. Such a loss of precious alcohol could not be tolerated and the steam pumps were stoked and barrels filled - beer and powder both. The Dwarf fleet moved forward guns ablazin. Someone really should have remembered to put shell in the barrels as well as powder.
In response the other fleet made a mad scramble for action, with Orc frigates surging forward, elf vessels cutting across the bows of the Orc cruisers at close range in the race for glory and battle. Orc gunners were heavily chastised to avoid any greenblood on blueblood incident, reflexes being what they are.
A short sharp gunnery duel ensued with the elves attempting to flank a force of dwarf frigates, cruisers and heavy cruisers while the Orc frigates drew fire and the Orc cruisers jockeyed for firing solutions while sailing very close to the wind. Unnoticed, the dwarf battleship cruised steadily on the far side of the engagement lead by a frigate screen.
The next hour of engagement saw shot and shell battering back and forth, with orc frigates being massacred to the last powder-goblin. During this time that had attempted a number of boarding actions, and damaged the paintwork on a number of vessels. The last words of the orc frigate squadron commander are recorded as 'But I had a bath 2 years ago!'.
In return for a shattered frigate squadron the dwarves had lost a couple of frigates and a heavy cruiser. However their main line cruiser squadron was busy running broadside on the orcs and elves who were busy getting in each other's way. The battleship and its escort had moved to a central position and was ranging in its guns carefully.
It was at this point that Rik the Beardless ordered the remainder of his closely engaged ships to press harder, ideally with - as he put it - 'The Pointy End!'. Spattering into elven ships the boarding actions were brief, messy and unfortunately vaunted dwarven battle prowess was defeated by cunning elven construction of their boats. The gunwales were too high for armed and armoured dwarves to scale. The elves calmly captured a trio of dwarf vessels by pouring beer into the sea and watching the marines jump after it, leaving their vessels to be towed away. By this time however, two elven vessels were significantly damaged despite the capturing of enemy vessels.
The wind was becoming a problem on Elf and Orc vessels. More of problem on the orcish vessels probably. In order to engage the Dwarves, both fleets had to start turning into the wind, which stubbornly refused to back. The elves carried out a circuitous turning circle to bring their battleship into range and dispatched their two crippled vessels to sail to safety while the remaining cruiser followed the leader.
A classic duel erupted in the centre, with Orc for'ard guns blazing ineffectually on Dwarven armour who replied with their own broadsides. With the poseur ships out of the way the Orcs charged, bloodlust pumping, guns blazing totally focussed to the enemy in front of them, ignoring the frigate squadron that was taking them from the rear. In the titanic collision of forces the Orc cruisers lost two of their number while inflicting massive damage to the enemy cruisers but not enough to sink them. Vessels crashed into one another leaving the last orc cruiser and a dwarf cruiser derelict in the centre and getting in everybody's way. Last words are recorded on the dwarf cruiser's black box are interpreted to be 'Bugger this for a game of soldiers, lets get drunk'.
The endgame of this epic, and yet possibly Phyrric struggle saw the elves closing on dwarven vessels. Rik the Beardless's remaining frigates captured the last Orc cruiser in what must surely have been a vicious fight despite the limited number of orcs remaining aboard. It has been reported to the Surgeon-General that Rik himself suffered from severe splinter wounds while charging up the ladder. Navigational issues failed to recrew the derelict dwarf cruiser to save it. The final exchanges of fire saw the engaging elf cruiser sinking 'neath the waves, dwarven ingenuity getting shattered rudders and engines working again in the nick of time despite the loss of a final dwarf frigate.
The orc and elf fleet was heavily shattered, and the 8 vessels sunk and one captured yielding a 26,000 ton sinking rate. However, while the Orcs and elves sank less they captured more leading to a tonnage total of 27,000.
It has been reported that the Orc Nation now have placed a bounty of 4000 cannonballs upon the head of the Elf Admiral as they suspect perfidy on his part - well they would if they could spell it, but lets leave it at orcs don't like elves. It has been further discovered that as a result of this event, Rik 'Ard has left the navy and is expected to lead the 1500m medley team at the next Haslet Games in Orclo. The mood of the Orc Nation can be read as 'Sulking in Defeat'
In Dwarvenhold, Rik the Beardless has developed a reputation but not a good one. He has been reduced to one pint a day for one year, to be reduced to 6 months for good behaviour. He would have been reduced in rank to Able Seaman, but the Naval Board decided that this would have been excessively ironic.
Rear-Admiral Belle Ami brought most of his command home and gun camera imps have demonstrated flair, resilience and sinkings in his favour. On the basis of outsinking the enemy 2 to 1 and while hoping the gun camera footage is not too clear and distinct as to what was sunk he has claimed victory for his flotilla against the enemy.
Our Elven Admiral returned home to laurels and acclaim for defeating two enemy captains of reknown and one allied one.
Thus ends the story of the battle fought in the archipelago before the island known as Caddetch
