OK, I've ordered the other half of the stuff from Scotia-Grendel. And some bases.
One battalion of UN Space Marines inbound!

Boringly there's no UK supplier for the space rats which means the inevitable faffing about with import duty and then the post office's fee for charging the duty...

The Post Office fee for acting as your Customs Agent is more than reasonable, considering how much private agents and couriers charge for single packages. You dont have to pay it, you can act as your own agent by directing the package to be picked up at your chosen port of entry and going to clear it yourself. Having done that myself for work packages at ungodly hours in the pouring rain, Id rather pay someone else.

I recently paid them 8 pounds to collect the 2pounds-something duty on parcel valued at 15pounds 90.
Meaning the cost of import was more than half the cost of the thing... That's quite a high tax rate...
Eight quid to collect 20% on parcels of 1000 pounds looks more reasonable. The issue is really the fixed-fee vs the low triggering threshold.
(And it added three days to a fortnight shipping time!)

Yeah, eight quid for someone to act as your customs agent is cheap even if you ignore the whole paperchain cost below the actual custom agent action, and assume the fee is only for being a Customs agent. Its utterly irrelevant that the duty paid is small, it NOT a tax, its a fee and tax/duty paid is not what sets the Mail's costs, its attendance when called by Customs and clearance of each item -actions that arent related to the dutiable and taxable value.
So yes it appears large comparison for a small duty fee but it doesnt change what they had to do....the upshot is that its a cost of importing goods so you either buy big to lower it in comoarison to the duty paid, stay under the trigger point or step around it and act as your own agent,
As I noted, Couriers charge much more for this service - you normally dont see the fee because its hidden invisibly in the service fee for transport, but if you have one courier hand to another you see it.

OK, I've finished a mech/power-armour mercenary group. I've also painted, but not yet based, some super-tanks. I've done a bunch of civilian vehicles. The tail-lights were fiddly but generally I'm quite enjoying the simplicity of painting 1/300. Next up: "Terran Authority" combined arms combat teams. I was pondering trees. I have the ones I made, and somewhere the parts for making more... but there is this option: www.ebay.co.uk/itm/160pcs-Model-Trees-Train-Street-Railway-Layout-Diorama-Wargame-1-250-Scale/201831543416Could multi-base them on something from Warbases.

For people wanting into this -- I have a coupon for 20% off Ground Zero stuff in January. I'm planning to get some Full Thrust ships that look fun, some "Moongrunt" 15mm stuff and some more 6mm things for "Horizon Wars"-- if people want to get some 6mm stuff I can add them to my order.
(I've started painting Moongrunt figures!! They're fun. Come out really well with washes. Running out of white undercoat now tho.
