Rise of the Luftwaffe campaign
OK RotL got through a test mission for campaigns and started a Campaign
The evil Axis player (Dan) selected early September to invade Poland.
For those looking on this is a 4 mission campaign and we got through the first. Each side selected its mission special options...Axis going for 2 more Bf110s to add to their 2 Bf109s and 2 Bf110s already in the mission and Blitzkrieg to get bombs on their fighters and to increase points gained from bombing their target - which was Polish troops. A mid range sort of option.
The Poles chose some planes (for want of a better description of P11c's) to defend with. The weakest option in their arsenal but then things can only get better from here and it wasnt a high point target.
The speed of the fighters meant a short mission - 2 turns in, the game fixed 3 over target and 1 home. All started at high altitude. The dogfight started with the poles throwing everything they had at the German fighters - unfortunately this was not a great deal as Im sure Sam will be able to describe and by this stage ran out of cards and found high altitude replenishment rates were - ummm - poor. The dogfight rapidly dived down to low level and unfortunately the Poles continued to descend even further with only minor damage to the german forces.
The German fighters 'braved' light flak at their target to bomb and strafe and inflicted moderate damage to the target for enough return fire to damage one plane to a scoring level.
Current standing Axis - 16, Poles - 2
If multiplied by 4 this would give a final result just at the top end of the historical outcome band.
Next week - more Messerschmitts over Gdansk! Can the evil Axis triumph, will the Poles take to their cavalry of the skies and repel the Aerial Panzers??? Only Smarties have the answer.......
THe rest of the Poland campaign got played to completion.
Mission 2: The Axis drew a Railyard as the target, high value bombing run giving thm 2 He111 and 2 Do17 aircraft. The Germans decided that escort were unimportant in the face of the Polish kite-like defence and so chose to suppress the Flak guns at the target. THe Poles ordered 2 elements of P11c's (remember them - the kites) into the air with very Spartan orders involving their planes.
The bombers came in at medium altitude and proceeded to drone calmly to target. The P11's started high and dove down to attack the bombers. In doing such much paintwork was scratched, but very little in the way of significant damage was done.
Flak guns did some damage scoring solid hits and flaming 2 of the bombers and the Germans relentlessly claimed that it did put the bombsights out so thats why they wildly missed anything. During the dash for home the P11c interception was......of limited effect.
Result: 12 - 25 in favour of the Poles for this mission.....hurrah for the gunnery detachments.....
Mission 3: A factory complex was targetted and 4 Ju88s sent to do the job. Decinding escorts would be handy a pair of Bf110s were sent too. The Poles defended their infrastructure with their heaviest defences, a pair of P11c elements - one with an ace pilot capable of turning a stringbag into a killing machine. The poles also had a sneak attack up their sleeves and bounced the German attack. This mission was heavily fought both in the air and over target. The factory complex was heavily damaged scoring many points - but the P11's and the flak accounted for 2 He111s down, one more crippled and the fighters took a beating - although the Polish fighters took heavy and rapid losses.....
Result 29 points apiece gained.
MIssion 4: The Germans demoralised and licking their wounds drew and airfield assault involving a set of bombers and 109 escort with blitzkrieg orders to increase ground damage scores. The Poles threw the reminaing pair of P11s that they had into the air doing minor damage to the German planes. Again the planes did very little, and it was the flak guns that supported the Polish cause despatching Heinkels with aplomb. THe target was very heavily damaged, mainly by one of the Heinkels delivering its bombload to target, still in the plane.
Result: 29-17 to the Germans
Overall score - a dismal German performance, and an Outstanding Polish score. Viva POLSKA!!!!
A new campaign was started, The Battle of France. One mission got played
Mission 1: Germans were tasked with attacking French Army elements. A pair each of Bf110s and Do17s were tasked to the mission. THe Germans then selected a further pair of Bf110s as their mission option. The Allies chose a pair of Hurricanes with some scout planes engage the German advance earlier than expected.
This action was, umm, brief. In the first turn the Bf110s bounced the Hurricanes, shooting one down, in turn the remaining Hurricane engaged the 110s, but 2 turns later were joining their fellows in a fire fuelled, handbasket ride to the French countryside.
Elated the Germans proceeded to target and proceeded, well to be honest, worry the local sheep and thats about all before going home to drown their sorrows and brush up on things like trajectory, bombsights and putting the fuses in.
Score: 20 - Nil to the Germans, come on Chaps - it'll take several football matches to make that one up
n the misty French dawn an airfield lay sleeping, unaware that droning through the early morning dew came the Luftwaffe 2 Dornier D17s and 2 Ju88s....
Well perhaps they were aware because they had time to phone up Dowding himself and request help - which turned up in the form of a pair of Hurricanes in this theatre of dreams. The Axis forces were augmented by a pair of Bf110s on a fighter sweep. The fighters tangled for 3 turns before the bombers arrived and the Bf110s left. The Hurricanes came out of that much to the best.
A number of attacks on the bombers left one flaming to the ground and a fair amount of minor damage to both the Hurricanes but proximity to the target forced the fighters away and the bombers entered what was to become, to them at least, the very gates of hell. One bomber down over target, one damaged to the point of being unable to effectively bomb at all and the third crippled on the way out left 2 damaged planes to the tender mercies of the awaiting Hurricanes and an airfield where the Adjutant was agitated, the CO KO'ed, the mess messed up right and proper but little real damage done. Despite taking damage sufficent to hand victory points to the Axis the Hurricanes ground the remaining Axis bombers to magnesium based fireworks.
On this round: Germany 7 England 44 - what a score to wish for, eh?
