Dear all,
I assume many of you enjoy preparing miniatures, rulesets and scenarios for games and find it difficult to actually play games with them. I have this problem too! I also have a ton of troops and hardly ever put them in the field.
Given the breadth of interest in miniatures gaming of various kinds within the club, I am keen to actually set up a few games this season so I know how best to spend my evenings, which armies I should box up and which I should dust off. I love preparing stuff, but actually want to get to some dice rolling. Please let me know your thoughts - what would you like to play?
Attached to this post is a poll with the various games which I have miniatures for / an interest in playing. Below is a summary of the lead time I will need for each game and the type of lead* time I will need to put something on the table. If you have any suggestions or proposals, I'm happy to hear them too. I have helped playtest other peoples' homebrew rulesets at the club before and always enjoy it, so if you have any thoughts or would like some help, please advise!
Fantasy Warriors
I have played a few games with my elves at the club and am always up for another bash with them. Selecting this will get me motivated to finish my horse archers, buy a dragon or similar gribblies, and spend more time drawing up the maps of the world we have discussed in the "Map for Fantasy Warriors" thread.
Killzone
Katie brought this ruleset up the other day and it looks pretty good. I would like to play this and I have a fair few sci-fi troops who could pass muster. I might also invest in some cyberpunk-style miniatures as well, I like the setting, could use a rewatch of the Matrix trilogy, and I have never seen Blade Runner so this would be an incentive to do that at last.
Lion Rampant
I have played a couple of games of this so far and have some half-assembled Perry Miniatures which I am painting up as the army of the King In The North (of Westeros). I also have some armoured knights who will be painted as Riverlands heavy cavalry. Katie and I have discussed putting this on the table in the past, I belive she has some Lannisters painted up.
Dragon Rampant
I do not own the rulebook for this, but that is a major character flaw. While I enjoy fantasy warriors, I also fantasise about putting my elves on the table for the "Rampant" system. Anyone with a fantasy army who would be up for this, let me know, I need an excuse to buy this book.
Homebrew: Starships
Quite a few club members have helped me run laboratory games with my Mass Effect (et al) fleets. The rules are constantly improving** and after spending a week in a red coat firing off blanks at some congenial zulu chaps I have a few ideas for version IV of the Hyperlight rules. This time, it will actually be possible to destroy a ship (I should have swapped the order of moving and shooting in the turn to fix that one, but I have revised the card system as well).
Homebrew: Sci-fi firefight
I also have a selection of Mass Effect 28mm converted miniatures which I once, abortively, tried to blog about. I have tried a few commercial rulesets to play games with them, with no satisfaction to date. Currently, I have come up with the basics of a homebrew ruleset which may either be a revolution or a disaster. This is a 'wild card' option but may be entertaining and will help me live my fantasies of becoming a game designer.
Homebrew: Crimean War
Believe it or not, I have a keen interest in historical wargaming as well and very little experience of it. My period of military history interest is the 19th Century and I have a modest collection of Crimean War 20mm plastics with which I have never staged a game at the club. A friend of mine devised the nucleus of a ruleset for the Napoleonic era some time ago, I am looking to adapt it to a mid-19th century setting and including a grand strategy component based on the board game Diplomacy. If this sounds interesting, vote for this.
Warhammer 40,000
Having reviewed the Rogue Trader thread in the miniature wargames section, I would like to get my Imperial forces back in the field. I have no particular investment in the 4th edition + rules I used to play with, I have always heard great things about the elder days of 40k, and frankly there are a multitude of 'big battle' rules out there which might work just as well as anything produced by the Evil Empire. If you want to see the 58th Praetorian Fusiliers down at the club, vote for this.
Other (please specify)
I want to play with my toy soldiers, but I am not heavily invested in any one specific ruleset this season, ideally I would just like to roll some dice and think about my moves. Other historical periods I am keen on include WW1 (I have some 20mm plastics), the anglo-irish war (I have some 28mm metal miniatures for the IRA and the RIC and a few vehicles) and frankly would be up for playing anything. If you have any thoughts on how I might use my collection, let me know - you're all experienced people and I would love your advice as the winter closes in.
*or plastic.
