Just a heads up that Model Zones closing down sale has 20 to 50% off everything including paints and modelling accessories

Is it actually a closing down sale for the Cambridge store - the reports coming out of the administrators elsewhere (TMP and the like) were that this was essentially a fire sale to generate some cash flow which they thought would make the buisness a going concern - they even opened a new store in London after the receivers were called in - which is usually a sign of an attempt to recover the business rather than extract its assets for creditors.
Lego was on cheap too......

Naff Lego though. The stuff you can get these days is rubbish. It's all film tie-ins, or City, or that pink girly stuff. What happened to the knights and dragons or the cowboys and indians or the egyptian explorers or underwater or space themed stuff? And the boxes that used to have different variations you could build using the same kit on the back, but now it's all just the same stuff from a different angle with some photoshopped trails and flares to make it look more interesting, as if they think playing with it was the fun part rather than building it.
...And now I feel old for grumbling about the 'good old days'.

You have to get the decent sets off the internet site -- the city buildings are well designed (but pricey).
The new store in London was opened before the administration was announced -- because I went, was unimpressed and two days later the company exploded.
I don't think they're trying to save the company -- my understanding is that they went round furiously opening shops trying to make a space grab. 12 and 24 months on, the starter discounts on the rents have expired and the fleet as a whole is nowhere near making rent/rates. I think it's the case that they also have huge debts from the stock purchasing and they can't service that debt now in addition to the other liabilities.
"as if they think playing with it was the fun part rather than building it."
Some time ago, they identified Playmobile as being one of the competitors for a large segment of their target audience.

I agree. I always found the fun of Lego for me was never following the instructions for making the stuff on the front of the box but just having a big box of random bits and using your imagination to build something far cooler. ;D

Don't get me started, my neice and nephew have sets they've built and now sit on shelves as ornaments; never to be broken up and rebuilt into whatever whim their imagination chooses create...it's all rather sad...sigh.
