I wonder if this is an 'end of the line' sale? Having said that, I'm considering entering Roll Call this year. Anyone fancy trying ADLG out sometime?

Why would it be? -- FoG isn't the fastest selling system ever, but it's a decent slow-burn success with a lot of support. It's a decent cash cow and it's not like Osprey need to do a lot to support it apart from print some books once in a while...

No explosions yet it seems. Anyhow, I signed up for Roll Call in April, so need more games so I can practice using a later Crusader army. I can bring both armies so if anyone wants a game you can choose from the following:
Zhou Chinese (lots of chariots) Warring States Chinese (crossbows and chariots) Hellenistic Greek Principate Roman (Legions and auxilia) Han Chinese (cavalry and crossbows) Southern Dynasties Chinese (cataphracts and crap infantry) Sui Chinese (cataphracts and decent infantry) T'ang Chinese (elite cavalry and decent infantry) Song Chinese (crossbows and infantry) Feudal Western European forces (Knights and spears) Medieval Scottish (spears, spears, spears and some more spears) Ming Chinese (cavalry and Ok infantry) Later Polish (Heavy knights and light cavalry)
Failing that, anyone want to try out ADLG with me sometime?
Oh, and merry Christmas!

Chad,
Thanks for the link to the Slitherine book sale. It looks like they and Osprey are switching over to print on demand. Not sure what this will mean long term for FoG.
I can't make the club tomorrow (18th), but should be able to make it the following Monday (25th) for one of my rare appearances. I see that my Byzantines are one of the armies on the Roll Call list, so I can bring them to face your Crusaders. I can probably muster 900 point, but I'm not sure I'll be able to complete a game in the evening, I'm a bit rusty with the rules. I assume you want to use version 2.

Hi Simon, yep, that would be great to meet up on the 25th - would you like me to pick you up? No worries if we don't finish a game, at least I'll avoid an inevitable crushing defeat. Do you want me to bring some models to act as proxies for the Bizzies so you can make up 900 points? If not then how many points do you want to play? I'm not too fussed about the format, just as long as I get a game with Later Crusaders, an army I wouldn't normally choose to take! Cheers, Chad PS Like your avatar, but don't let it go to your head!

Chad,
A lift would be good. I have enough dark age types to add to my Byzantines to make a 900 point army, so you can field your full competition army.
The avatar was Alison's idea. Its a picture of a wooden statue from York that used to be be put outside a tobacconists to advertise snuff. It's now safely housed in the Merchant Adventurers Hall.

OK, I'll pick you up at 6.30-ish. And yes, V2 of the rules if you're able!
By the way, a competition rule is that all knights listed as 'heavily armoured' be costed and counted as just 'armoured', in case you hadn't already seen this and it affects your possible choice!

Chad,
I've had a re-think, it's probably easier for me to meet you at the club. A lift back would be useful.
Version 2 of the rules in not problem, I'll dust off my copy. Thanks for the info on knights. I see most of the Roll Call competitions have sold out. I'm not sure what is happening with FoG. Both Slithering and Osprey are selling off existing stock, suggesting that they are cutting back on their support, and the rules seem to be dropping off in popularity (see http://blog.vexillia.me.uk). I guess we're at that stage where everyone is waiting for the next big thing in Ancient wargaming.

Could the falling numbers be down to the GW lure that youngsters face now.
Patrick runs a thriving 40k club at school and GW have a tournament every year specially for school teams. I can't think of any other company/rule set that does that. We're all getting older and there's no young blood coming through.

I think GW has always 'outcompeted' other wargame genres, I remember in the 80s none of my mates were into historicals, but those that were into any kind of miniatures gaming were only into GW stuff. As regards falling numbers, I think absolute numbers have fallen, but not catastrophically. I think the main issue is that not all ancients gamers are playing the same ruleset - when DBM fell over people went either to DBMM or FoG, and then numerous other rulesets came out, or pre-existing ones were taken up. At the Nottingham club I used to go to, there was almost nothing but DBM going on at its height. Now they're playing mainly Flames of War. ADLG is the new kid on the block, and it seems to have been receiving some interest (from me too) - there is some commentary on it on Madaxeman's site: madaxemandotcom.blogspot.co.uk/2015/07/lart-de-la-guerre-5-games-and-some.html. The only problem I can see with ADLG is that some might think it's a bit too DBM, what with elements and the like, but a few games of it should give us a better idea of what it's about (hint hint)! By the way, Sam will be down the club in a couple of weeks to face my Later Crusaders with another army of mine, so there's another ancients gamer!
