It was tempting but I didn't have the time. I shall have to read Dagon again to punish myself.
Incidentally if the Mythos interests and you want some updated takes on the whole idea then I heartily recommend Charles Stross' 'Laundry' series

If you have an ereader there was a fairly cheap bundle. Do have a look at a website for the bibliography. As well as the main books there are a few short stories as well and some were bundled with eBooks or included in certain printings of the main texts.

They're also on the Gutenberg Project.

Tim, if you'd wanted to punish yourself with Dagon, you should have come to the show!
In the first act the troupe read Dagon and The Outsider. I must confess I did not enjoy Dagon, which is an unforgiving slab of text at the best of times. The lady performing read the whole thing with her arms folded, also, which made the whole performance rather choked and one-note. The energy picked up with a slightly hammy but basically enjoyable rendition of The Outsider but my hopes were not high by the interval.
But what a turnaround! The chap who read The Colour Out of Space had energy and range and really kept the audience on a string. Madame has literally fallen asleep reading Lovecraft stories in the past, but she really enjoyed this performance and I confess I got a chill down my spine several times. The sound effects (most, but not all of them enhancing the performance) were performed live (!) and we got to see the bucket of crushed peppers and the sheet of steel they were bending at the end.
I will definitely go to another performance by this lot. Apparently the troupe usually do some readings of "Poe or Lovecraft" around this time of year, and it struck me that old "H.P." would have been thrilled to be mentioned in the same breath as the great Edgar.
Just make sure you filter that tap water...

I meant the Lovecraft stuff is on Gutenberg...
I think I might have arrived at this thread halfway through.
