WW1

RCW should work -- figures are limited in 28mm. Earlswood games club in Solihull did a fantastic show game a few years back at WMMS. Armoured trains, teddy-bear fur tundra, little wooden log buildings, loads of Copplestone figs. Lovely. Copplestone does really, really nice stuff, but a little pricey. Musketeer do ww1 russians and Tsuba do sino-russ which would probably work and that's about it really. Westwind do some cossacks. Old Glory do do WW1 Russians, but there are very few photos to see what they're like. Reasonable at just over a quid each. WW1 figs would also need converting (remove shoulder straps mostly) for Reds. HLBS used to do a load of useful vehicles, not sure if they still do. Sloppy Jalopy do Ford lorries. Empress do the Austin armoured car used by both sides.
later 1920s, maybe. Colonial battles probably ok.
30s might be pushing it. There's no differentiation between armoured cars or tank types and no other vehicle rules, so as the fighting gets more mechanised and less horsey, it'll struggle. SCW, you want WW2 era rules for.

WW1

I've ordered a copy of "The Men Who Would Be Kings" (after a perusal of a dodgy PDF of it) and scarfed a WW1 conversion off the interwebs.
It's kind of like a cross between "Dragon Rampant" (for the movement & morale ) with a more "Rebels and Patriots"-like shooting system and the random-leader generation is done PER UNIT.
There's some simplified ArmCar/Tank rules in the expansion which look reasonable. However, I don't think the units are portable with the other rules in the way that PL/DR/LR are.
I suspect it'll only really work for the "open" eras rather than trenches, but I'm deffo tempted to go get figs. Probably Germans and French because I'm fed up of painting British Khaki, having done a load for Mars Rampant and still not finished that.
They recc 36-48 points for WW1 which is about 60-80ish figures. I'm going to do some reading to generate some orbats.
Woooo!!! Bang,bang,bang!!!

It's interesting, but I can't see how all the tech cards fit in there...

Ah, no there are 15 gang members, 10 troopers and 5 mechs.
There's a 7 quid version which is just the book, counters & ref card. I'm just trying to understand how rate of fire values work for my stats compilation.

Basic in the game rulebook, but there's a free expansion pdf with more options and also a bunch of extras on the website. It doesn't have the character gang attributes like KZ but it instead has a skill system (along with progression).
I'll see if I can compile a set together into a single doc.
The box set is not bad for 15 quid -- there's 5 mechs (same sprues as the ones I use for Horizon Wars), 10 gang members and 5 soldiers in the box (so about a tenner of miniatures) plus a pad of roster sheets, rule book, scenario book, counters, quick ref sheet and some card buildings and a bunch of D4, D6 and D8. (Shipping is free above 25 quid, so if we were getting several would make sense to combine)
(There are upgrades and extra metal parts for the figures at Moonraker Minis which are much better than the plastic arms/weapons. Not the BEST figures in the world, but not bad for the price.)
It's definitely similar to KillZone and definitely feels like the sequel and with a similar scale. The morale rules are better without being too fiddly. There's also better zombie rules... :-)

I've ordered a copy of "Combat Zone" from EM4 because I was ordering bases and spotted that it was only 15 quid at the moment. It's due today!!!
CZ is the evolution of "Kill Zone". Don't know whether it's as good or not but the box set comes with a bunch of figures anyway so I figured I'd see.

I think we can play faster when we get used to the rules. And I suspect the nest damage was about to ramp up because a lot of the ground forces were "poorly". There were a lot of very shooty mice near my nest and they'd be doing 3-4 wounds a turn, a lot of clawy birds near Joe's which (if not rattled) can do 3 wounds a turn. Those commandos that had just landed will tear a nest apart really quickly if they get close: They're rolling 9 melee dice a turn, so 4-5 wounds each time. I don't think this is a "slow gradual whittling" game. I've compile an armylist builder: docs.google.com/document/d/1oPmMjmcwmyAO7gjH3qclb1aE2-I4ZLxhEZzzPM_Na80/editWe were using 77/78 points a side -- the recc is 30-50 per player. Now, here's an interesting feature -- the rats don't have a tinkerer character. So they can't build ballistae...

OK, so Tail Feathers is GOOD STUFFS.
And, AND, we dint even have all the rules!!! There are special action cards (which are paid for with CHEESE!) and death spiral birdfights and things!
I've got enough cards/figures that we can do all the players having hybrid forces. (which means multiple missions per side in play as well!). The only limit would be on the squad sizes, because there's only 12 rat commandos and 12 oakguard. I'll get some decent prints of the rookie pilot cards as well, and there's another character mouse pilot. We could also use proxies for some of the ground forces (I've got cards for 2 spiders, 2 centipedes, 2 roach infestations but only 1 set of figures) -- Reaper does some suitables bones figures.
One rule we missed -- if you have a full wheel of cheese, you re-roll cheese dice results.

We can't play M&M -- it turns out I've lost some of the figures. (No idea how. Damned annoying.) I've ordered replacements, due mid-week.
We should try the bird version. (We don't need those figures for that)

I've ordered a second copy because then there's enough birds/figures to play it four player!
Actually, this looks pretty neat. It's a bit like X-wing -- there are movement templates and a ruler for ranges. The direction decision is simpler (you can pick left/striaght/right) and the combat is by diceroll (damage is public, not secret). There are special abilities & stuff.
The part that's really spiffy is there are ground troops: melee, range attack, artillery!!... they can be carried by birds and also use leaves to drift across gaps... There are points values, conversions for characters from M&M.
It looks AWESOME.
I'll bring it on Monday!!

Eeek!
(Also, I've just ordered "Tail Feathers" because characters are portable between it and M&M)

Busy in small gaps, wrote this: docs.google.com/document/d/1ij0_oD9VGXOehYGkmCDDs0YTV1kKKefFoy69xPBgqNw/editThese are all the Lion Rampant, Dragon Rampant and Pikeman's Lament units along with all the overlaps. Turns out many of the units are the same or (with a buff/nerf) can become the same. For example, "Aggressive Commanded Shot" == "Elite Foot" == "Men-at-Arms". Some of them are potentially useful variants -- "Horde"/"Serfs" are similar to "Clubmen", but the latter are less fighty but have a short ranged attack. "Light Riders", "Mounted Yeomen" and "Dragoons" are all the same stats but the PL "Gallopers" don't have an equivalent in LR/DR -- but they could represent, for example, Mounted Samurai Archers. "Clansmen" are the only oddity -- cheaper than "Bellicose Foot" and with a movement buff, but with no nerfs. This might be down to more units in PL being shooty ones.
